Irelia is a fighter who can play in the Mid or Solo Lane. Irelia is a versatile, mobile, high-mechanical champion with a high skill ceiling. Bladesurge allows Irelia to be super mobile with the reset mechanic in the laning phase and teamfights and is a great way to stack her passive Ionian Fervor. Irelia starts the game off strong when played correctly, but she progressively falls off in the late game.
Make sure to check the alternative build at the top of the page for playing Irelia in the Mid Lane.
Hitting enemies with abilities grant bonus attack speed for a few seconds, stacking up to 4 times. At max stacks, attacks deal additional magic damage on-hit. Abilities that hit multiple champions grant multiple stacks, and attacking enemy champions refreshes the duration.
Irelia heavily relies on Ionian Fervor to deal damage. Always, before starting a fight, get your Ionian Fervor stacks up to max to deal bonus damage. The most reliable way to stack Ionian Fervor is by using Bladesurge and resetting the ability on multiple minions before looking to hit Flawless Duet and Bladesurge onto the enemy.
Irelia dashes through an enemy, dealing physical damage and healing herself. Bladesurge's cooldown is refreshed if the target was marked (from Flawless Duet or Vanguard's Edge) or dies to Bladesurge. Bladesurge also applies on-hit effects, so item passives like Spellblade will allow Irelia to deal more damage with Bladesurge.
Bladesurge is one of Irelia's most important abilities. It allows her to be super mobile during the laning phase and teamfights. Minions are a great way to dodge in and out of fights, and it helps you get your stacks towards Ionian Fervor.
When you hold Defiant Dance, Irelia defends herself with her blades for just over a second, taking reduced damage. When you release the ability, Irelia whips the blades forward, dealing physical damage, increasing by up to 100% based on charge time.
Don't think of Defiant Dance as a damaging tool. Use it to reduce damage when engaging in teamfights and block high-value skillshots. You can also use Defiant Dance to last hit minions at range or get minions low enough to use Bladesurge to get resets and start stacking your passive.
Irelia sends a blade to a target location, which can be recast within a few seconds to send another blade. The blades then converge upon reaching their destination, dealing magic damage, stunning for a second and marking enemy champions hit for a few seconds.
Flawless Duet is Irelia's primary crowd control, giving her set-up potential for Vanguard's Edge and Bladesurge. Flawless Duet can also provide vision when hit, so it can be used to check bushes or on jungle monsters to escape danger.
Irelia fires a storm of blades that deals magic damage and marks enemy champions for a few seconds. After hitting an enemy champion, the blades explode into a wall for a few seconds. The wall deals magic damage and slows enemies for a second.
Each enemy hit will count as a mark for you to be able to use Bladesurge on the target. If you hit four or more enemies, you can get full stacks on her passive with just one ability. Vanguard's Edge can be combo'd with Flash to extend the distance before the animation starts.
Trinity Force synergises great with Irelia's Bladesurge. Since Bladesurge applies on-hit effects, the spellblade passive increases the damage when you use Bladesurge throughout the game.
Blade of the Ruined King gives Irelia incredible damage potential, and the passive allows her to deal more damage and move speed to stick to enemies and dodge skillshots.
Wit's End helps with Irelia's damage potential and is great vs champions that deal magic damage.
For runes, we have the following:
Conqueror provides sustained damage and healing, allowing you to be strong throughout the game. It also has insane synergy with Irelia's kit since she'll use Bladesurge and other abilities for resets.
Brutal gives Irelia's auto attacks and Bladesurge more damage since it works on on-hit effects.
Coup de Grace provides additional damage that helps burst enemies when they are low on health.
Giant Slayer is another good option when playing against bruisers and tanks that build a lot of health.
Legend: Alacrity gives Irelia more attack speed on top of her passive and items to become a great carry throughout the game.
Bone Plating helps Irelia take reduced damage from melee champions that want to fully engage.
Second Wind is a great choice when playing against poke damage.
Irelia's early game is dependent on her Ionian Fervor's stacks. You should only look to dash in a trade when you have full stacks of Ionian Fervor. This can be achieved by last hitting minions with Bladesurge. You want the minions to push towards you early so you can stack your passive for free and look to all in with Flawless Duet at Level 3. Make sure to save Defiant Dance for when you are about to be hit by a high-value skillshot. If you use Defiant Dance for damage you'll leave yourself exposed.
Playing Irelia in the late game can be a little tricky. It's all about timing, knowing when to hit the go button and engage. You do not want to be the first person to engage with Irelia. She is not considered a tank; instead, you want to look for flanks to clean up the backline. Crowd Control is one of Irelia's weaknesses, so before engaging, consider what crowd control the enemy team has and what can stop you from carrying. Resseting your Bladesure is a fundamental when looking to play Irelia, and this also carries over to teamfights. Hitting multiple enemies with Vanguard's Edge and stunning enemies with Flawless Duet will make a massive difference in fights.
Overall Irelia is one of the most highly skilled and mechanical champions in the game. It may take awhile for you to learn her but once you do it'll feel super satisfying.
